It has been an eventful year in many ways.  The Covid-19 pandemic slowed the world down and has created a very real sense of uncertainty.  In the United States we are facing yet another divisive election.  It has also been a year of intensive writing and thinking for my co-author, Greg Buchanan, and myself.  Time has moved quickly, and we submitted our final manuscript to the publisher a week ago.  Now begins the process of the production editor’s review, of which we anticipate some back and forth on the content to right-size the book.

The manuscript is about 86,000 words with over 150 images and graphics.  It is divided into 4 sections, with Part 1 broadly addressing the profession and making the case for process management, Part 2 examines Lean for management, practice and deliverables, Part 3 looks at ways to implement Lean across the firm and Part 4 wrapping things up with a number of resources.

We have had some insightful contributions from other professionals addressing financial metrics, project planning, nurturing and leveraging firm knowledge, the co-habitation of design with Lean, and an outside perspective from one who participated in the transformation of manufacturing.

All in all, we think it will make for a compelling read and most importantly, meaningfully address areas where the design profession needs to grow and change.  Publication is anticipated for March 2021.  We will provide updates here periodically.
